Dhoni bats for India veterans

As India's experienced players drew flak for their lacklustre show in the just lost Test series against Sri Lanka, ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni yesterday came in their defence, saying they did not need to prove themselves.

Dhoni, who gave the Test series a miss but is returning to lead the team in the shorter version matches, disagreed that experienced players should be more accountable than other members of the team in the Tests.

"You cannot ask a Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman or Anil Kumble to prove their credentials," Dhoni told PTI in an e-mail interview.

Indian middle-order batsmen were specially underfire as they failed to put on enough runs on board in the entire Test series against Sri Lanka which India lost 2-1.

Asked if he was ready to lead in the Tests as well, Dhoni said, "I think you should ask the selectors and the Board of Control for Cricket in India this question. I am happy with whatever they have in mind." The Khel Ratna awardee wicketkeeper-batsman, however, agreed that it was high time India improved to consistently win matches and reach the top of the world rankings.

"I think it is just with time we should start winning in ODIs consistently. We are a great team and we start doing well pretty soon.

"Australia as a team is still far ahead. Yes, we can beat Australia and we have proved that. But to do it consistently we have to improve a lot. I think once we become more consistent we can think of being number one," he said.

Sri Lanka's mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis Breaks WR

Sri Lanka survived early blows to clinch the series against an injury-ridden India with a comfortable eight-wicket victory on the penultimate day of the third and final Test here on Monday.

The hosts lost Michael Vandort and Kumar Sangakkara in the opening seven overs before reaching a 122-run target in the closing session, thanks to Malinda Warnapura (54 not out) and skipper Mahela Jayawardene (50 not out).

Sri Lanka had won the opening Test by an innings and 239 runs and India the second match by 170 runs.

India, trailing by 147 runs, were bowled out for 268 in their second innings despite gutsy half-centuries from a struggling Rahul Dravid (68) and an injured Venkatsai Laxman (61 not out).

The tourists were without paceman Ishant Sharma, who batted with a runner but was unfit to bowl after falling on his follow-through on Saturday.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh shared the new ball with Zaheer Khan and struck with his fourth delivery when he bowled out-of-form opener Vandort (eight), who finished the series with just 39 runs.

Zaheer claimed a big wicket in his fourth over when he removed Sangakkara, who drove straight to Gautam Gambhir at mid-off. Sangakkara, who made a solid 144 in the first innings, contributed only four.

There were no more hiccups for Sri Lanka as Jayawardene and left-handed Warnapura made the most of India's depleted attack, adding 101 for the unfinished third-wicket stand.

Warnapura hit five fours in his fourth half-century in seven Tests, while Jayawardene finished the match when he cut Sourav Ganguly for his third four.

Sri Lankan spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis earlier dashed India's hopes of setting a challenging target as they shared three of the five wickets after the tourists had resumed at 161-5.

Unorthodox spinner Mendis, all of 23 years, had Dravid caught at first slip by Jayawardene for his third victim of the innings to finish the series with 26 wickets, the highest by any bowler in a debut three-Test series.

The previous record-holder was Englishman Alec Bedser, who took 24 wickets against India at home in 1946.

Dravid and Laxman batted defiantly to add 85 for the sixth wicket before Mendis ended India's fightback. Dravid hit six fours in his 166-ball knock, his first half-century of the series.

Laxman, batting with a runner after twisting his left ankle on Saturday, hit three fours in his second half-century of the series to emerge India's most successful middle-order batsman with 215 runs in six innings.

It was an easily forgettable series for Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.

Tendulkar, who needed 172 to break retired West Indies captain Brian Lara's world record of 11,953 Test runs, could make just 95 in six innings without a half-century. Dravid managed 148 and Ganguly 96 in three Tests.

Sri Lanka halfway there

Sri Lanka tightened the screw on India with a superb all-round performance on the third day of the crucial third and final Test here on Sunday.

The hosts were indebted to debutant fast bowler Dammika Prasad and Kumar Sangakkara for boosting their hopes of clinching the series as India struggled to 161-5 in their second innings at stumps.

That meant India were just 14 runs ahead with five wickets in hand. Rahul Dravid was unbeaten on 46 and Venkatsai Laxman on 17 not out.

The series is tied at 1-1, with Sri Lanka winning the opening Test by an innings and 239 runs and India posting a 170-run victory in the second match.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 396 in the afternoon in reply to India's modest first-innings total of 249, with left-handed Sangakkara making a solid 144 for his 17th Test century.

Unorthodox Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis (2-39) broke Englishman Alec Bedser's record of 24 wickets in a three-Test debut series. Mendis has bagged 25 wickets in the ongoing series.

Prasad ended India's early flourish when he dismissed stroke-happy openers Virender Sehwag (34) and Gautam Gambhir (26) in successive overs.

Sehwag was caught by Thilan Samaraweera at gully, while Gambhir inside-edged a delivery on to his stumps while attempting to pull. The pair added 62 off just 10.4 overs.

India were without Ishant Sharma in the morning as the fast bowler was unfit to bowl after falling on his follow-through in Saturday's last session.

The injuries to Sachin Tendulkar and Laxman forced under-pressure India to change their batting order.

Tendulkar batted down the order after suffering an elbow injury on Saturday and Laxman made his appearance with a runner (Gambhir) after twisting his ankle during practice before the second day's play.

Sourav Ganguly (18) batted ahead of Tendulkar, but did not last long as he was adjudged leg-before off spinner Muttiah Muralidaran by umpire Mark Benson of England.

The batsman requested the official to review his decision under a new experimental rule which is on trial in the ongoing series.

The rule allows a batsman or fielding captain to request a review of any decision by referring it to the third official monitoring television replays.

Benson's initial decision turned out to be correct when he consulted TV umpire Billy Doctrove of the West Indies.

Tendulkar (14) also fell in a similar manner, but off Mendis, to remain without a half-century in the series, like Ganguly.

The match was evenly-poised on Saturday, but Sri Lanka gained the upper hand in the morning when they added 101 to their overnight total of 251-6 for the loss of just one wicket.

Sangakkara, 107 overnight, added 80 for the seventh wicket with Prasanna Jayawardene (49) against a depleted Indian attack. He hit 14 fours in his 288-ball knock before being caught behind.

India's hopes of bouncing back into the game rested on early wickets, but their bowling options were limited in the absence of Sharma.

The tourists struggled even against lower-order batsmen Jayawardene and Prasad (36), who batted defiantly to extend their team's lead.

India's fielding also left a lot to be desired as extra runs were given away and a couple of run-out chances missed.

Sachin, VVS set to bat

VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, who suffered injury scares on the second day of the third Test in Colombo, are expected to be able to bat in India's second innings.

Laxman suffered a mild ankle strain before the day's play while doing a fielding exercise and did not take the field. Rohit Sharma substituted in his absence. Tendulkar jarred his left elbow attempting a catch in the 47th over of Sri Lanka's innings. His left elbow, which has had its share of concern in his career, was immediately wrapped in an icepack. He was replaced in the field by Dinesh Karthik.

Laxman underwent an MRI at a local hospital and Tendulkar has received treatment in the Indian dressing room. The details of the injuries will be disclosed at a later date.

However, shortly after a member of India's dressing-room staff disclosed the status of the two's injuries, Ishant Sharma limped off the field. Ishant fell to the ground after sending down the third ball of his 16th over -- the 73rd in Sri Lanka's innings -- and was unable to continue bowling. Harbhajan Singh completed the over. Ishant's right thigh was the source of his discomfort, though it's not sure whether he pulled a muscle or was suffering from cramps.

Middle-order batsman need Big runs

India will be looking forward to handsome contributions from their famed middle-order in the crucial third and final Test against Sri Lanka starting here on Friday.

The series is tied 1-1, with Sri Lanka winning the opening Test by an innings and 239 runs in Colombo, and India bouncing back with a 170-run victory in the second match in Galle.

India have quality batsmen in Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Venkatsai Laxman, but they rarely looked at their best in the last two Tests.

Laxman is the only middle-order batsman to have cracked a half-century in four innings, while Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly have failed to convert good starts into big knocks.

Tendulkar, chasing retired West Indies captain Brian Lara's world record of 11,953 Test runs, has so far contributed 75 in two matches, with 31 being his highest score. He is now 97 runs short of the record.

All the middle-order batsmen were troubled by Sri Lankan spinners Muttiah Muralidaran and Ajantha Mendis, who shared 34 wickets in two matches.

Mendis, an unorthodox spinner with plenty of variation, grabbed 18 wickets and off-spinner Muralidaran 16. They are expected to play major roles in the final match.

India captain Anil Kumble was confident the middle-order batsmen would return to big-scoring ways.

"Everybody has got starts. Sachin was batting brilliantly in the second innings (in Galle) and Rahul also," he said after the second Test.

"Sourav spent some time in the opening match, but did not get an opportunity in Galle. Laxman has been among runs, so it (middle-order) is not really a worry."

That India managed to square the series without sizable contributions from the middle-order batsmen was mainly due to the excellent form of openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

Sehwag buried Sri Lanka's spin threat with an exciting strokeplay in the last match, hammering an unbeaten 201 in his team's first-innings total of 329 and a half-century in the second. He was named man of the match.

Gambhir made successive half-centuries in Galle, helping Sehwag add 167 for the opening wicket in the first innings and 90 in the second.

In contrast, Sri Lanka are still looking for a solid start from their openers. Michael Vandort's form is the main worry as he has contributed just 17 runs in three innings.

The hosts also expect their fast bowlers to keep pressure on India. Veteran left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas has so far taken four wickets and Nuwan Kulasekara one.

India's pace attack looked sharper in the last match, with Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan sending the hosts reeling at 10-3 in the opening four overs.

Sri Lanka could never recover from the early blows and were bundled out for 136 chasing a 307-run target.

India will be without coach Gary Kirsten, who left Tuesday for his native South Africa to be with his ailing mother.

"There is a lot of expertise in the team. There are five guys who have captained India, so it will just be a case of co-ordinating the expertise that's already there," said Paddy Upton, a member of India's coaching staff.

"Individually, each person needs to take some responsibility to contribute to the win. We are very confident and comfortable that we have got the players in the team who can win us this Test match."

Ishant Sharma wrecked Sri Lanka's top order

Teenager Ishant Sharma gave a superb display of fast bowling to help India square the series with a 170-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test here on Sunday.

Sharma finished with 3-20 off 15 testing overs as Sri Lanka were shot out for 136 in their second innings in the closing session on the fourth day chasing a challenging 307-run target.

India lost the opening match of the three-Test series by an innings and 239 runs. The final match starts in Colombo on August 8.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (4-51) and leg-spinner (2-41) built on Sharma's effort to help their team win with more than a day to spare.

Harbhajan, who took six wickets in the first innings, completed his fifth haul of 10 or more wickets in a Test.

"I always had faith in my team. We knew we could come back as we have done it in the past. There is no doubt there is enough quality in the team," said India skipper Kumble.

"The (90-run) start given by openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in the second innings was crucial. Then Sharma and Zaheer bowled brilliantly today (Sunday)."

The 19-year-old Sharma wrecked Sri Lanka's top order with two quick wickets in a sharp opening spell before returning to break a stubborn partnership in his second spell.

Sri Lanka were on the backfoot following Sharma's double-strike before collapsing against spin late in the day. The hosts lost their last five wickets for just six runs, with Harbhajan taking three and Kumble two.

"I think 307 was a good total to chase, but the loss of early wickets put us under pressure. Sharma has shown that questions can be asked from batsmen if you bowl in (the) right areas," said Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene.

"They (India) played really good cricket as they knew it was a crucial game for them. Our bowlers kept us in the game, but batting let us down. We now need to come back strongly in the final Test."

The hosts began the chase on a disastrous note as they lost three wickets for a meagre 10 runs in the opening four overs, with Sharma taking two and left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan one.

India's spinners were expected to call the shots on a wearing track but the tourists seized the advantage through their fast bowlers as Sharma unsettled the batsmen with his pace and bounce and Zaheer with his movement.

Thilan Samaraweera (67 not out) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (38) alone defied the Indian pace-spin combination with a 76-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Sharma broke the stand immediately after the tea break when he had Dilshan caught by wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Harbhajan had Prasanna Jayawardene caught by Sourav Ganguly, who took a well-judged catch at square-leg.

Sri Lanka were in deep trouble after losing Kumar Sangakkara (one) and in-form Mahela Jayawardene (five), who were known for playing long innings.

Sharma, who removed Malinda Warnapura with his third ball, got the big wicket when he had Jayawardene caught by Rahul Dravid at gully. Jayawardene scored a century in the opening Test and 86 in the first innings here.

Zaheer struck in his second over when he dismissed Sangakkara, beaten by the movement to be caught by Venkatsai Laxman at second slip.

India earlier faltered against Sri Lankan spinners Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralidaran as they were bowled out for 269 after resuming at 200-4. They lost their last five wickets for 17 runs in a dramatic collapse.

Unorthodox spinner Mendis, who took six wickets in the first innings, finished with 4-92 to complete a maiden 10-wicket haul in only his second Test.

Muralidaran took two of the six wickets that fell in the morning to finish with 3-107.

Sehwag was named man-of-the-match for scoring an unbeaten 201 in the first innings and 50 in the second.

"It (double-century) was one of my best knocks as it came at the right time," said Sehwag.

"I wanted to bat as long as I can. I don't feel pressure when I go in to bat because my captain and coach have always backed me. I always like to play my shots."
